So coming by train from Schiphol Airport for example is very easy and takes about 2.5hrs in total (either direct or with 1 change). A single ticket is c. EUR 25. Use www.ns.nl for train times. But if you are going to do that, that I'm sure you've already worked out how to get there! A bit about Grou and the area Grou is the sparkling heart of Friesland and it is seen as the water sports capital of the Netherlands. Being surrounded by lake Pikmeer (and many others), Princess Margriet Canal and national park ‘Alde Faenen’, it makes it ideal for sailing, canoeing, cycling, fishing, walking and many other activities. But even if you‘re not interested in doing outdoor activities, there are enough things to keep you busy. The centre of Grou has got a lot of character and you will certainly enjoy a drink in one of the many pubs at the waterfront in between shopping. In the area there are several other nice villages (like Sneek and Ter Herne) where you can experience more of the local culture and visit some museums. You can also visit the city Leeuwarden, which is the capital of Friesland, and spend a day shopping! A bit further is the “Waddenzee”, where you can walk through the sea with a guide to one of the islands (or take a ferry..). You could be lucky and see some seals along the way. So, there is plenty to see and do in the area and you can reach everything by car, bicycle, boat or public transport. The national park is c. 10min by boat and you can start sailing from the jetty. You can rent your boat from the park, but there are many other rental firms in the area. There are plenty of cycling routes, and you will soon notice that there are no hills or mountains to protect you from that stiff summer breeze!
